Egypt's participation in phase I

WSIS Phase - I, Geneva 10 - 12 December 2003

• More than 11,000 participants from 175 countries attended the Summit and related events.
  1. 50 heads of state/government and vice-presidents.
  2. 82 ministers.
  3. 26 vice-ministers and heads of delegations as well as high-level representatives from international organizations, private sector and civil society.
• Outcome of Geneva phase:
  1. WSIS Declaration of Principles.
  2. WSIS Plan of Action.
• Egypt participated intensively in the different preparatory events and meetings for the WSIS on three different levels:
  • Arab Level:
    • Regional Preparatory Conference for Western Asia, ESCWA, Beirut, 4-6 February 2003.
    • Arab Working Group on WSIS meetings, League of Arab States.
    • Pan Arab Regional Conference on WSIS (Arab African Dialogue) 16 - 18 June, 2003 hosted in Cairo.
      
      

• Participated in formulating the Arab Action Plan.

• African Level:
  • African Regional Preparatory Conference, 25-30 May 2002, Bamako - Mali.
  • All of Bamako Bureau Meetings.
  • Participated in formulating the African Action Plan.
• International Level:
  • PrepCom-1, 1-5 July 2002, Geneva - Switzerland.
  • PrepCom-2, 17-28 February 2003, Geneva - Switzerland.
  • Intercessional Meeting between PrepCom-2 and PrepCom-3, 15-18 July 2003, Paris - France.
  • PrepCom-3, 15-26 September 2003, 10-14 November 2003, 5-6 December 2003, And 9 December 2003, Geneva - Switzerland.

Egypt participated in the first phase with a high level delegation headed by the President Hosny Mubarak

• Round Tables:
  • Three round tables were held in parallel with the plenary meetings:

1. Creating Digital Opportunities
2. Diversity in Cyberspace.
3. ICT as a Tool to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

• Egypt participated in two of the round tables.
  1. Dr. Ahmed Nazif participated in ӄiversity in CyberspaceԠround table.
  2. Dr. Adel Danish, CEO, Xceed, participated in ӉCT as a Tool to Achieve the Millennium Development GoalsԠround table.

• Egypt's Participation in ICT4D Exhibition in WSIS 1st Phase
  • Egypt's participation in ICT4D Exhibition, which is one of the main parallel events in the WSIS 1st Phase, was very remarkable as it showed to the participants and the visitors of the exhibition the four main initiatives of Egypt : PC for Every Home, Free Internet, IT Clubs and Broadband on 100 m2 . Moreover, Egypt took part in ITU Membership Stand in the main summit area.
