Participation of NCW

The Secretary General participated in the ESCWA Round Table on "Promoting the Participation of Women in the Information Society: Building a Gender Balanced Knowledge-Based Economy." This meeting was held in the conference room of Le Kram on 16th November 2005ý, during which success stories and challenges of the region were highlighted. Emphasis was placed on the importance of using gender disaggregated statistics, adopting engendered policies and gender budgeting, in which NCW is currently actively engaged.


ICT Development in the Arab Region (ICTDAR) was a regional workshop on the use of ICT to empower the civil society organized by UNDP, which was held on 18th November in the Jerba Hall. Dr Farkhonda Hassan described the involvement of NCW in ICT activities, and in her presentation, she focused on how the council is trying to reach out to all women, particularly the most disadvantaged groups. Of these groups includes those in rural areas, to raise their awareness of their legal rights, using simple language through ICT vehicles, such as CDs and cassette tapes. She showed to the delegates the material prepared for this purpose.

Dr Hassan participated in the closed Round Table 1 meeting, as part of the official Egyptian delegation headed by Dr Tarek Kamel. This was held in the Round Table room, Kram Palexpo, on 17th November.

Dr Zeinab Safar-Technical Advisor to the Secretary General

Dr Zeinab Safar took part in the parallel event of the Arab Women Organization (AWO) that was held on 18th November 2005. Her presentation was titled ‘Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as a Decision Support Tool for Arab Women Development'. The presentation displayed many illustrations and figures of great interest for women in the Arab world, to study the major issues affecting their status, not only at the level of the country, but also at its smallest administrative sub-division, the markaz. This presentation highlighted how this electronic tool could serve decision makers and maximize the impact of their strategic interventions. Besides being a panelist, Dr Zeinab attended other parallel events at the summit.

Exhibition-ICT 4 ALL

The ICT 4 ALL Exhibition was a multi-stakeholder event with attending representatives from the United Nations, private sector, governmental bodies, civil society, and other international organizations. Exhibitors attended from all over the world, and the exhibition centered on five themes, integrated into the architecture of the entire exhibition, and a partnership area in divided into quarters. The themes were as follows.

  • Partnership and Financing
  • Research and Innovation

The Egyptian National Pavilion in the ICT 4 ALL exhibition featured innovative examples of the use of Public Private Partnerships as a mechanism for development. The exhibition took place in Hall II, Stand 2405, between 15th and 19th November 2005.
Egypt's pavilion carried the theme of Public Private Partnership in ICT' and demonstrated the use of partnerships within the government's policy of e-Inclusion, e-Content, e-Government, e-Access and e-Learning. NCW was amongst the participants within the e-Inclusion program, along with other ICT development projects, and NTRA. A multimedia presentation presented four participating projects under the e-Inclusion initiative.

VIP visitors

A number of distinguished figures visited Egypt's Pavilion and expressed interest in the displays of NCW, among who were:
  • H.E. Dr Tarek Kamel, Minister of Communications and Information Technology;
  • H.E. Dr Ahmed Darwish, Minister of Administrative Development;
  • Mrs Mervat El Tellawy, Executive Director of ESCWA;
  • Dr Ismail Serag El din, Secretary General, Bibliotheca Alexandrina;
  • Dr Haifa Abu Ghazala, Regional Director, UNIFEM Arab States Regional projects.

On the social side

The NCW delegation attended two receptions. The first was held on 17th November 2005 in Centrale Place, Kram Palexpo, and was hosted by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The reception featured statements by a number of eminent personalities and a multimedia presentation. The second reception was hosted by Ambassador Shadia Farrag, Egypt's Ambassador to Tunisia, on 18th November 2005 in her residence.

Media

WSIS attracted wide media coverage, at national, regional, and international levels. NCW Secretary General granted several interviews to the regional and international media to give visibility to how NCW is using ICTs to enhance women's status in Egypt, and how it strives to improve the condition of the more vulnerable groups of women.
